NSAID Complications Part V: Conclusion

NSAID Complications part 5, on organ damage

It might be easy to get the impression that we at Creekside Chiropractic are adamantly against the use of NSAID anti-inflammatory medications based on our last four postings. This is not true at all. They have wonderful applications if used responsibly. The purpose of this chain is to help educate on the consequences of misuse, primarily what happens when taken daily for many months or years. Every drug has side effects, sometimes they are so subtle that we do not notice them until they build up over years and cause damage to vital organs. Because NSAIDs are over the counter, it is easy to assume that they are somehow safe or risk-free. Today’s citations outline general literature on increased risk for kidney, heart, and stomach/colon damage. Acetominophen use has been loosely  connected to all three in a study that analyzed a massive amount of data over many years.

Further data on specifics of the cardiovascular safety concerns are outlined below. Interestingly, it notes that the FDA guidelines suggest using the lowest dosage for the shortest period of time with these drugs.

We don’t always see that logic translate to how they are practically applied in society, do we?
